The Wren Story This series is based on the story of the Wrens of the Curragh. The ''wrens'' were an outcast community of 19th-century Irish women who lived brutally hard lives outside the Curragh military camp in County Kildare. Their name comes from the shelters they lived in, hollowed out ''nests'' formed in the ground and covered with furze. Their number included unmarried mothers, alcoholics, criminals and vagrants. My series takes its lead from Martin Malone's novel, 'The Only Glow of the Day', where a young pregnant girl follows her lover to the camp but ends up rejected and homeless, turning to prostitution as a means to survive. The strong colour palette references allegorical tableaus of the time including cheap penny dreadfuls, tarot cards, gaudy marionette theatre devices and puppet shows.
